I have long considered the following passages to be ‘words to live by’… But, the Bible is filled with wisdom – indeed, it (He) is the source of all wisdom. (Jhn 1:1-3; 1Ki 4:29) More than that, or more specifically, I consider these to be somewhat of a personal mission statement. This of course precludes beginning each day with the Lord’s prayer, (Mat 6:6-15) putting on ‘the whole armour of God,’ (Eph 6:10-18) and taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. (2Co 10:3-5)
Would that I live by each one of these passages, without hypocrisy, to the glory of God, the edification of the body of Christ, and the betterment of posterity. Without further ado, the list, in Scriptural order…
What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?Psalm 116:12 KJV
My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.Proverbs 4:20-27 KJV
Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
And I set my mind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly; I realized that this also is striving after wind.Ecclesiastes 1:17-18 NASB95
Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.
I have seen that nothing is better than that man should be happy in his activities, for that is his lot. For who will bring him to see what will occur after him?Ecclesiastes 3:22 NASB95
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 KJV
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.Isaiah 26:8 KJV
Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?Micah 6:6-8 KJV
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.Micah 7:7-10 KJV
Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.
Then she that is mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her which said unto me, Where is the LORD thy God? mine eyes shall behold her: now shall she be trodden down as the mire of the streets.
I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.Habakkuk 2:1 KJV
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.Matthew 6:33 KJV
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.Luke 17:10 KJV
But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.Acts 20:24 KJV
But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?Romans 2:3-4 NASB95
Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?Romans 9:20-21 KJV
Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.Romans 12:1-2 KJV
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.1 Corinthians 1:18-25 KJV
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.1 Corinthians 2:2 KJV
Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.1 Corinthians 4:1 KJV
Now … we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies.1 Corinthians 8:1-3 NASB95
If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know;
but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him.
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;Ephesians 4:11-12 KJV
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.Ephesians 5:10 KJV
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.Philippians 1:21 KJV
But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.Philippians 3:7-14 KJV
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.Colossians 1:24 NASB95
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.Colossians 3:1-4 KJV
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything.1 Thessalonians 1:8 NASB95
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;1 Timothy 4:1-11 KJV
Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
These things command and teach.
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:James 2:8, 12-13 KJV
So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;1 Peter 1:15-16 KJV
Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;1 Peter 4:1-2 KJV
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.1 John 5:4 KJV
